Small Ensemble Research Task
Percussion Ensembles
The type of small ensemble I have chosen to research is the percussion ensemble. This is an ensemble entirely made up of instruments coming from the percussion family, such as the xylophone, woodblock, snare drum or timpani.
The type of music that is played varies, some ensembles are made up of classically trained musicians playing orchestral chamber music, some are very traditional to their culture and use their countries traditional instruments and music as it is part of their customs or religion (many of these are found in Asian countries such as Japan and Taiwan), while others take a non-traditional approach and use creative objects such as furniture or kitchen appliances as their instruments.
Percussion ensembles are also very commonly found in schools. In America this is largely because after World War II a man called Paul Price, a percussionist, composed percussion music for his students, who then went on to be an award winning composer, since then it’s stuck into the music academic system. In other countries like China they are prominent in schools because they are in the country’s culture and history from thousands of years ago.
There are also professional percussion ensembles that get commissioned to play and compose, such as Nexus, So Percussion and Stomp. Stomp is a brilliant example of a non-traditional percussion ensemble because they almost never use actual drums! Instead they use everyday items such as brooms, newspapers or basketballs and create pieces of music with their different sounds.
Percussion ensembles are truly one of the more unique small ensembles as you can use almost any object in the world as your instrument and get really creative, as long as it’s played as a percussion instrument.

The Cat Empire
The Cat Empire could be called a rock band of sorts, which is a type of small ensemble. They are a sextet of Aussie men from Melbourne who've been playing together since their teens in high school. The band has 6 members; Felix Riebl (singer/percussionist), Harry Angus (singer/trumpeter), Ollie McGill (keyboardist), Will Brown (drummer), Ryan Monro (bassist) and Jamshid Khadiwala (turn table). They’ve released 8 studio albums, 4 live albums, 18 singles as well as a few collaborations with other artists. They've toured all over the world, from Spain to England to America and of course Australia. They don’t really have a specific genre as their songs have many such as rock steady, hip hop, Latin jazz, and ska. When asked to describe their music the only clear reply is “it’s for dancing to”, which makes perfect sense as they’re known as one of the best global live bands ever (They're also like my favourite band but whatever...).
"SO WHEREVER YOU ARE ON THE PLANET, IF YOU TAKE A LOOK AROUND AND SEE HANDS IN THE AIR, SMILING PEOPLE DANCING LIKE NO-ONE ELSE IS THERE, AND YOU CAN HEAR A SOUND FILLED WITH SUCH JOY THAT IT SEEMS TO ELEVATE YOUR SPIRIT TILL IT SOARS, THEN CHANCES ARE YOU ARE LISTENING TO AND WATCHING ANOTHER THRILLING SHOW BY THE CAT EMPIRE, BORN IN MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA, ADORED THE WORLD OVER." - The bottom of their biography page
Here's a video of them playing one of their songs live:
