Cover Arrangement Portfolio

For this assignment I made a cover of the song 1955 by Hilltop Hoods. My partner was Strahan and we used his bass guitar, my drums, our voices and some instruments and effects on Bandlab, the website we used to record and edit on our laptops.

Here's our cover:

And here's the original song:

I personally enjoyed and hated making this thing. Strahan and I were both really keen on the idea of doing 1955 as soon as it was suggested, we really liked it’s funky vocals and rhythms, the little bits of old radio ads and just it’s general vibe. I very much enjoyed learning the parts to this song, particularly the drums and lyrics, because it’s such a fun song to perform. My number one favourite part to record were the little radio ads and you could make stupid voices and it sounds really cool with the scratchy and echoey filter we put on them. I really benefited from the notation of the score on Noteflight, it improved my ability to hear rhythms and write them down by ear, distinguish different notes from each other, know where the different pitches are on a bar and my understanding of different notes and rest lengths. However as helpful as it’s been, the most absolutely frustrating part of this assignment was 100% the notation as it took me the longest out of everything, the website would take ages to load and sometimes I’d take an hour just to figure out four bars of the chorus. It was also not very fun when Noteflight or Bandlab WOULD SOMETIMES NOT SAVE FAT CHUNKS OF WORK I’VE SPENT THE PAST COUPLE OF HOURS WORKING ON, that happened multiple times and oh my gosh REEEE. Another thing that got quite annoying was when it had gotten to the 50th time of recording one little section of a part, altho I only have my abilities to blame.

Overall though I am quite glad we went through this process, I’ve learnt a lot and I’m pretty happy with the end result, but I still reckon once in a lifetime is enough thanks very much miss…
